Press release
Tirana, 6 May 2019 – Coalition for Reforms, Integration and Consolidated Institutions (KRIIK Albania) has followed in continuity the work and decision-making of the Central Election Commission (CEC), including its conduct in preparing and supervising the electoral process for the 30 June 2019 elections.
Today, on 6 May 2019, KRIIK has issued the STATEMENT “Preserving the impartiality and integrity of the Central Election Commission, vital to the functioning of the democratic state and rule of law”.
The Statement draws the attention of the members of the Central Election Commission and its administration, to the necessity of preserving their personal and institutional independence, impartiality and integrity, especially under the circumstances of the current extreme political polarization of the country.
The STATEMENT is initiated by the conduct of the CEC members and its administration in relation to the flagrantly non legal of the electoral subject “Democratic Conviction Party”. The decision has been taken not only in open violation of the law, but also in contradiction to the official stance of the CEC of four months ago to not tolerate any delays on the registration of electoral subjects, previous practice of the CEC in the two last electoral processes, as well as with a decision of the Electoral College.
KRIIK calls upon the members of the CEC and its administration to act in respect of the spirit and letter of the law, as well as to take a proactive role in ensuring the integrity of all aspects of the electoral process. They must avoid any political influence or pressure, as well as any reference to previous extralegal or incorrect conduct or practice, or double standards, as not doing so would undermine the confidence of citizens and deepen even more the extremely polarized political situation in the country.
